How to Use Nails in Place of Shear Pins

When a piece of equipment fitted with a shear pin stops working in the middle of using it, the shear pin has probably broken. Shear pins are designed to break to protect the more sensitive parts of the machine from damage. This usually occurs when a moving part of the machine comes into contact with an obstacle that keeps it from moving forward. The stress transfers to the pin and it shears off. If you can’t make it to the store for a replacement shear pin right away, consider using a nail until a proper pin can be found.
Instructions:
1.Remove any fragments of the sheared pin from the hole in which it broke. Use a hammer and tapered center punch to tap it out of the hole(s).
2.Realign the two parts of the machine or equipment that the shear pin was holding together. This can most often be done by hand after the fragments of the shear pin have been removed. If you can’t do it by hand, engage the operating mechanism of the machine so it spins the powered part until its hole aligns with the hole in the unpowered part. This may require several attempts before achieving realignment. It’s easier if you ask someone to watch the holes while you engage the operating mechanism.
3.Slip a nail of equal size to the diameter of the shear pin through the realigned holes. The nail must be long enough to go all the way through the holes. The head of the nail must be wide enough so it doesn’t go straight through the hole. If the shaft of the nail size matches that of the shaft of the shear pin, you shouldn’t have a problem.
4.Bend the pointed end of the nail with a hammer or pair of pliers until its flat on the part of the machine it was inserted through. Engage the machine to see if the nail holds the two parts together. If it does, continue working, but get a new shear pin as soon as possible. The nail is just a temporary fix.

Yorkville Delays Decision on Circuit Breaker Criteria

YORKVILLE — Officials will be taking a closer look at changing how the city subsidizes garbage pickup for senior citizens. This week, aldermen sent the question of making the criteria to qualify for the subsidy more restrictive back to the Administration Committee for further study. The council has several times in the past talked about eliminating or changing the way seniors pay for garbage pickup as a cost-cutting measure. The proposal before the council this week was to tie the subsidy to the same criteria the state government sets up for Circuit Breaker programs for seniors. Currently, the city offers garbage pickup to all seniors in the city for $1 a month. That costs the city $142,632 a year, according to Bart Olson, city administrator. He gave aldermen figures that said if the city used the Circuit Breaker criteria, it would give the subsidy to about 225 seniors, making the cost to the city only about $56,700 a year. Alderman Robyn Sutcliffe, 3rd Ward, in her last meeting as an alderman, said she knows of seniors with incomes of more than $100,000 a year getting the garbage subsidy. She said using Circuit Breaker requirements would “lower the subsidy to those who truly need it.” But other aldermen said they do not have enough information to gauge how much impact changing the subsidy might have. Olson said it is impossible to know now how many would qualify under new guidelines, because the city will not know for sure until it takes actual applications. Alderman Rose Spears, 4th Ward, said she knows of seniors who have taken their adult children in because of the hard economic times. “Technically, they cannot qualify for Circuit Breaker,” she said.

Vacuum Circuit Breaker – Protecting your home from voltage surges

People often think of only electronic gadgets such as computers, game consoles and audio/visual items, as being at risk from electrical surges. Actually, nearly every electric item in a house today has some sort of sensitive electronics which can be damaged by a surge.

A very common source of an electrical surge is a thunder storm. The voltage and current spikes from a lightning strike are enormous. If your house and wiring experience a direct or very nearby hit by lightning, even a good surge suppressor likely will not be able to protect all electronic items.

When a storm is forecast and you begin to hear the thunder off in the distance, unplug as many of your electronic devices as possible. Just switching them off may not be adequate protection. A huge voltage surge can arc across an open switch and still fry the electronic components.

It often is repeated smaller electrical surges that damage electronic equipment over time. These can be generated from the switching on and off of inductive equipment (usually electric motors) in nearby businesses. Some of these small surges can even be generated by your own vacuum cleaner, refrigerator compressor or clothes washer motors in your house wiring.

These small surges can slowly break down wire insulation or some electronic components. Eventually a wire may short out or the electronic component begins to malfunction and the appliance fails.

There are several types of whole-house surge suppressors available. Some mount on the circuit breaker panel indoors or are built into a circuit breaker. Others are designed to mount underneath an electric meter. Many electric utility companies sell and install the electric-meter-style units for you. The circuit breaker panel models are not difficult to install, but hire an electrician to do it.

There are differences in the protection provided by various surge suppressors. A common design uses metal oxide varistors (MOV) to absorb the electricity surge and dissipate it before it flows through the house wiring.

A physically larger MOV can absorb a larger surge. The basic specifications to compare surge suppressors are the maximum surge current (amperes) and the total energy dissipation (joules) it can handle. A higher number for both is better.

Even though the surge suppressor protected your electronics, a large surge many burn out the MOV. Many models have a light on them to indicate if it is still function or not. Check it regularly.

How to Replace an Industrial Circuit Breaker

If you’re a plant or shop manager, it’s up to you to replace or repair a circuit breaker when one fails at your company. Quick thinking and smart decisions can minimize downtime and improve safety.

Big stores, warehouses, factories, or any sort of large facility has commercial circuit breakers in its electrical system. If you’re a manager at any of these places, it may be your job to replace a failed circuit breaker. First, you’ll want to identify which circuit breaker is failing. Write down its part number and go online to check prices for a replacement.

If the breaker is less than 10 years old, you should be able find a replacement from a local supplier or online. If the breaker is older than 10 years, you may have to buy a used one online. Used breakers are reconditioned by approved facilities and usually come with a warranty, and cost much less than a new one.

A recent example at a plant I was working at needed to replace six Square D FA34100 breakers. We couldn’t find a source for new ones, so we went online and purchased six used breakers from Budget Breakers. These breakers came with a one year warranty, and looked brand new. We bought them for $153 each, compared to buying new ones for $267. That’s saving over $100 each!

But is buying a used breaker really worth the risk? For residential situations, I don’t recommend buying used breakers. Used breakers in a residential electrical system just don’t make sense. They are inexpensive, and are not easily reconditioned because of their small size. But used breakers in commercial plants and factories are very common, even recommended by some manufacturers, especially in some high-voltage situations. Many factories and warehouses schedule their breakers to be reconditioned after so many years and these breakers last decades!

So should you buy used breakers? I do, and a lot of other people do, but make sure that it fits into your needs first. And always consult with a certified electrician before making any purchases.

One you find the correct breaker, it’s time to install it. I always recommend breakers are installed by a certified electrician, especially in a commercial setting. These breakers are carrying very high amounts of power and can kill you! Call a local electrician and have them safely install the breaker, even used breakers that you didn’t buy through them. They will happily install used breakers.
